The Global Cold Chain Alliance’s latest Cold Chain Index for the first quarter of 2020 finds that labor remains the biggest cost for cold storage operators. Specifically, labor comprises 46 percent of operating costs, followed by rent/lease/mortgage (35 percent), electricity (10 percent), repairs (7 percent), and supplies and “other” at 1 percent each.
Meanwhile, the International Association of Refrigerated Warehouse’s 2020 rankings of the largest refrigerated warehousing and logistics providers in North America and globally, released in June, shows Lineage Logistics and Americold hold the top two positions, respectively, on both lists.
Lineage Logistics’ acquisition of Preferred Freezer Services last year allowed the company to surpass Americold as the largest cold storage provider in the world, with over 1.9 billion cubic feet of capacity across more than 300 facilities in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
